How the Pitman schedule works

The Pitman schedule is one of the most common 12-hour rotations for 24/7 operations. Four crews split days and nights, and each crew works a 2-2-3 pattern that repeats every two weeks.

Over 14 days a crew works 2 days, has 2 off, works 3, has 2 off, works 2, then has 3 off. The second week mirrors the first, so the long 3-day weekend lands on alternating weekends.

Two crews cover days and two cover nights. In this version crews stay on their shift (fixed days or fixed nights), which is the usual meaning of “Pitman”. The rotating version, where crews switch between days and nights, is usually called the Panama schedule.

Pay periods line up neatly: in a two-week period every crew works exactly 7 shifts, or 84 hours, so overtime is easy to predict.
